Green Facts

Recently, Korah’s Green Council performed recycling and waste audits on your trash! And the results are in. Here are some “Korah Green Facts” regarding Korah’s garbage.

In one day, Korah produced 100 lbs of trash... that’s 19000 lbs per school year! — over 19 tonnes!

That turns into over 20 lbs per student every single year... and that’s just during school!

Korah’s Green Council would like you to try to reduce your daily trash by using reusable containers for drink and sandwiches, and fill a Rubbermaid with carrots instead of buying packaged junk food.

Senior Girls Basketball Final

Highlights from final game against St. Basils.

Our girls turned in a valiant effort and pushed the St. Basil Saints to the wire on route to a 49 to 42 set back. Our girls definitely out worked the Saints which resulted in many turnovers. The girls should be very proud of their effort and how they left everything they had on the court. Abigail Fogg led the Colt attack with 17 points while Adri Ivey added 10 and Sam Iacoe chipped in with 9.
The coaching staff and girls would like to thank the fans who were simply outstanding. You were definitely a difference maker. You were loud and the girls definitely fed off that positive energy. Korah hosts NOSSA this year.
Congratulations go out to Abigail Fogg who was this years winner of the Referee’s Award which
combines sportsmanship and athleticism.

Cancer Awareness

Student Council ran a cancer awareness and fundraiser on Friday. Students wore pink and for $2.00 got a sticker that said "BeCause I care".

Students’ Council has embarked on a number of initiatives to help those less fortunate than us. They collected cans to start off our Canned Food Drive by Trick or Treating for Cans during Hallowe’en night. A competition between classes will continue. The deadline for collecting cans is Wednesday, November 17th, 2010.

In addition, they have once again spearheaded the Shoe Box campaign collecting various non-perishable items for children in Africa aiming for the city record of 200 boxes!

Pink day initiated the start of our campaign to help fight the spread of breast cancer with a proposed hair cutting event to take place prior to the holidays. Some staff have already committed to this event to the point where they are unrecognizable! As an FYI, our school will be holding its own Relay for Life event this year on Friday, June 3rd, 2011 helping to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society, prior to the city-wide event a week later.

Our two student senators along with the help of Mr. Dal Cin will be leading a proactive campaign at Korah similar to other secondary schools as part of the Project ABCD (Action for Building a Community that is Drug free) initiative.

Fashion Show 2010

Every year the graduating Colts put on a fashion show to raise funds for graduation and prom. After last year’s top-notch "What Not To Wear" fashion show, the Colts needed to think of something extra special. This year’s theme "So You Think You Can Dance" really suited the show, as the dances were amazing.
Choreographers Alena Atkinson, Kristine Caldbick, Kait Cupido, Connor Dunster, Jessica Gencarelli, Kristen Greco, Ashley Hunter, Nicole Maione, and Sadie Puddister worked hard to teach a cast of 41 these extraordinary dances. One of the favourite dances by the audience was the grad’s rendition of "Thriller," where almost the whole cast performed the original choreography from the famous Michael Jackson music video. The most loved dance of the night, by far was the "Mash-Up Dance" performed and choreographed by Mitch Dionisi and Cameron Prouse. This fantastic dance duo captivated the crowd the second they began.Hostesses Chantal Rose and Allison Bovingdon, modelled beautiful gowns all night from Susie Yoo. Allison says, "It's too bad they aren’t actually mine!"
Audience member numbers have gone up since last year, according to Mr. Elliott, who says "This is one of the best turn-outs in a while." After watching this exciting Korah Fashion Show, the audience was heard murmuring choruses of "That was really good!" or, "Awesome dances!" or, "I really enjoyed that, they did a good job!"
The Fashion Show team would like to thank: the Grad Committee, the choreographers, Jesse Evans (on sound), and Jay Nguyen (on lights), all of the donating stores, Mrs. Elliott (the teacher in charge), and Nicole Maione (without whom the show wouldn’t have gone on). Great work graduating Colts!

Water Project

Some students show their water bottles provided to all students at Korah by the Green Council.
Interview with Mr. DiBerardino
Y.B.: What is the water project?
Mr. D. In the water project we are trying to do two things. One is that we are trying to discourage the use of bottled water, and by that I mean plastic water bottles that you buy from the grocery store. In doing so we hope to eliminate these from our school because of the effects on the environment which were discussed at the presentation in June.
The second thing is that we want to challenge the students to drink only water for two weeks. The money they would have spent on other beverages, they would then donate so that we could give it to an organization which builds wells in countries that don’t have clean water. The premise for that is that one dollar can provide clean drinking water for 365 days. Ten dollars will provide clean drinking water for a person for a lifetime. So that’s what that we’re trying to accomplish, to raise money for that.
Y.B.: What exactly does the Green Council do?
Mr. D.: The Green Council is an environmental club that has different environmental initiatives each year. One of the things that we do every year is participate in the school cleanup once in the fall and once in the spring. Every year there are different projects; last year our major focus was on the plastic bag recycling program.
This year we got grants in order to buy water bottles for the entire student body and staff, to try to discourage the use of plastic water bottles. Our other initiative was to try and revitalize student street, or the courtyard in our school. We were able to receive grants in order to put in picnic tables and benches in the courtyard for students to use, so they’ll have some place to hang out outside during the day. We planted some new trees in there as well.

Spring Concert

Interview with Mr. Iacoe

New signage that has been added to the North side of Korah.

New Landscaping, stairs and railings added this year to the front entrance.

Yearbook: How was your first year back at Korah after being away for several years?

Mr. Iacoe: I first came to Korah in 1997 as a science teacher and headed the department before assuming the role as vice principal for three years. Since leaving in 2001 much has changed at Korah. Enrolment has increased, program offerings have broadened, extra curricular opportunities have blossomed, and building upgrades have occurred. It has been a great year, very rewarding working with students, parents, and staff and members of the Korah community. I am proud to be part of a school that is moving forward and I am really excited to be back knowing there is something for every student at Korah.

Yearbook: What new things have been added to Korah this year?

Mr. Iacoe: There have been many new enhancements made at the school this year. We have upgraded our outside grounds with a new front entrance, added signage with an improved and more modernized look and added horticulture and other features you can see around the outside grounds.Within the building we have had the opportunity to equip our auditorium with new lighting and improvements to the main stage area. We have also improved the appearance of the main office area and purchased additional furniture and equipment for our athletic and arts areas. You will also notice that enhancements have been made in the areas of text books and learning resources as well as the installation of a more effective wireless network throughout the school. As a school we have also begun to focus more on a green approach with the reduction of plastic and improvements to the student court yard which you will see in May and June of 2010. Lastly, the introduction of the PTA Super Bowl Raffle has helped many of our groups reduce the cost for families and students participating in various activities.

Yearbook: What can students look for in the 2010-2011 school year?

Mr. Iacoe: We will continue to build on what we have accomplished this school year. More improvements will be made to our auditorium, gymnasiums, main office, and student services areas during the summer of 2010. We have already committed tens of thousands of dollars on new desks, textbooks and learning resources for our students for next year. Thirdly, upgrades will be made in the area of IT with more laptops, Infocus projectors and other equipment. New courses have been added for students to enroll in, such as Digital Photography for one. Some new clubs will be introduced next year based on student interest. I have had several students approach me with some great ideas. More work will also be done to improve our exterior grounds if we acquire financial aid. I am hoping to increase the interest level among parents with our school council and PTA groups which are already well established here at Korah. Next year Korah will be home for many new staff and students as a result of the Sir James Dunn and Bawating amalgamation and we will be doing our very best to make everyone feel welcome and to become involved at our school.

Yearbook: We are starting a new decade. Where do you see Korah at the end of the next decade, 2020.

Mr. Iacoe: I see our school continuing forward with the great traditions that many people have established since Korah’s inception in 1967, over 40 years ago. Korah already is an excellent school with its people, programs and facilities but I see the school moving forward in a few areas. Firstly, to enhance our programs with a focus on green and alternative energy as a vehicle for future employment for our students. I want Korah to be the leader in this area in our community.Secondly, we need to continue to modernize our facilities to bring them up to the standards of not only the time in ten years, as a minimum, but of the future well beyond 10 years. I also see ourselves expanding our facilities and developing more partnerships with both private and public sector groups. Providing opportunities for our students and their families at Korah with absolutely no costs involved as a result of increased financial dollars either through fund-raising and/or alumni and community contributions, would be an ultimate goal for our kids.

Judges Award

Robotics Group 2009-2010

Although the Algoma District School Board’s Knights of Alloy robotics team did not qualify for the World Championships this year, the team did have an entry into one of the World FIRST final judges’ awards. In March, while attending the Waterloo Regional, the team’s own Ian Graham (robot programmer and website manager) was selected as a "dean’s list” finalist. This award recognized Ian’s substantial contribution to team leadership and mentoring newer team
members, as well as his efforts as a mentor for one of our local elementary school FLL (Lego) robotics teams. As a recipient at the regional level, his award was forwarded, along with the other 89 finalists from the 45 regionals, to the final award judging stage at the World Robotics event in Atlanta. The Knights of Alloy have just learned that when the final judge’s awards were read out in Atlanta on Saturday, Ian’s name was among the 10 winners that they selected.
It’s a high honour considering that of the approximately 2,000 entries received for this award at the regional level. Ian was selected to the final roster of 90 names and then came out as one of the 10 recipients. The team would like to congratulate Ian Graham for this distinctive honour and wishes him the best of luck as he embarks on his post-secondary pursuits once he graduates from Korah Collegiate and leaves the team at the end of this season.
