To recognize that all members of the human race are entitled to dignity and respect.
To acknowledge that the word retard(ed), even (especially) when used casually, strips those with developmental disabilities of their dignity.
I accept that they are friends, siblings, athletes, sons, daughter, sisters, brothers, mentors, workers, and classmates.
I understand that there are many ways to describe individuals with intellectual disabilities, and will promise to find one more respectful than the R word.

POW WOW

The beginning of the school year was a great time to start a new tradition with the Korah Family. Our 1st ANNUAL KORAH POWWOW and CULTURAL DAY was a great success! Thanks to Ms. Thompson, Ms. Barbeau, Mr. Lane, Mitchell Case, and Carol Trudeau-McEwen from ADSB for organizing the event! A special round of applause to Mr. Lane’s gr. 11 history class for demonstrating excellent leadership skills during the festivities. These students were great ambassadors, runners, greeters, and workshop assistants.
For our Powwow all students in grade 12 had the opportunity to participate in various workshops including: Traditional Cooking where they made bannock and wild rice casseroles with the Roach sisters and Ms. Trudeau-McEwen, Dance & Regalia where they learned about all the types of dance and costumes with Andrew and Bernadette, Traditional Teachings where Willard Pine spoke to the 7 Grandfather Teachings to a captive audience, Traditional Games such as Buffalo Balls were played in the gym with Phil Jones. The day finished with a feast and a powwow in the afternoon!

Youth Spirit Award winners

The International Baccalaureate Class of 2008 that is made up of 24 students has been selected as the United Way Youth Spirit Award winners for 2008. This group of students completed in excess of 2861 hours of community service.
Summary from application of why this group should receive this award.
This group of students went above and beyond in their service to the school, and the community. In addition to raising $10,000.00 for the Stephen Lewis Foundation they planned, organized and ran a successful AIDS Gala. They continued their involvement by volunteering their time at the YMCA and in organized sports like figure skating, football, hockey, karate and soccer and continue to be highly involved in their own sports and physical activities (this group completed 4848 hours of physical activity in the last two years. This group of students is an example of tremendous future leaders and ambassadors for Sault Ste Marie.

Award were presented Thursday June 19th at the Media Resource center at Sault College at the United Way's Annual meeting.

Fashion Show 2008

Fashion show was held by grads on June 6, 2008 and the theme was "Back To The Future". An epic struggle of two individuals on a perilous journey to get their grad party .... I mean exams. Doc and Marty voyage across the time-space continuum in a desperate attempt to make it ... Back to the Future!
Will they make it in time? You'll have to wait and see ... Only time will tell ....
Master of Ceremonies for this event was Jessica Merrifield.

Inner School Christian Fellowship

ISCF - Inner School Christian Fellowship is an interdenominational group of students who meet once a week to have lunch together and do a devotional that is faith based. We also run the ISCF foster child penny collection in which homeroom classes collect pennies and hand them in once a month to help support two foster children in third world countries. The classroom that raised the most money by the end of the semester wins a pizza party. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Math Master!

Congratulations to Mike Skinner who placed first, here at Korah in the University of Waterloo Euclid math contest. Mike won a medal for his efforts and helped Korah to place 6th as a school in our zone. Mike also placed third overall in the Algoma University math contest. That is third out of all the contestants who wrote! Now that is a math master!

Athletic Grads for 2008

Bridge Building

The Technology Department would like to congratulate Tomas Frecha on his third place finish in the annual Sault College Bridge Building Competition. Tom completed last week at Sault College in the high school division. Congratulations Tom on your Third Place Finish!

National Science Fair

Congratulations to Korah students Mackenzie Cook and Angelo Posteraro who attended the National Science Fair in Ottawa last week. Both students represented Korah with distinction. In addition to the competition, these graduating Korah students were able to attend university lectures as well as tour the nations capital. Mackenzie celebrated his birthday with 1000 new friends.
Angelo was successful in securing an internship to the Weizmann Institute in Israel this summer. Representatives of this university travel around the world and hand-pick some 60 students to attend this all expenses paid $8 000 program. Angelo was able to impress these talent scouts with his amazing knowledge of science, answering some very tough questions about his project.
Congratulations to both of our representatives, we are proud of your efforts in representing Korah to the country and the world.

Don't Drink and Drive!

OSAID (Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving) put together a display of a wrecked vehicle for students to ponder before the long weekend and graduation. Don't Drink and Drive or do not get into a vehicle if the driver has been drinking.
OSAID members are Amanda McBain, Mrs. Koskenoja, Aurora Maeers, Zac Carmody, Karissa Barbro, Anthony Florio, Jasmine Syrette, Krista Matte.

Contrary to popular opinion, drinking black coffee, taking a cold shower, or eating a big meal will NOT lower your Blood Alcohol Content. Only time can lower your B.A.C.

Anna McCrae

Mustang Sally celebrated character education with students at Anna McCrae Public School on Thursday, May 8. While setting up the stage,Mustang Sally members observed some fine character attributes from grade eight students, who showed exemplary teamwork while setting up the seating in the gym as they prepared for the afternoon performance. Mustang Sally members met with students and discussed the importance of several character attributes such as integrity, courage, teamwork,cooperation, responsibility, fairness, and respect. They explained how these attributes were embedded in everything they do as members of Mustang Sally. They also shared their own high school experiences and tried to alleviate any fears some of the students had about attending high school next year. The afternoon performance saw a very energetic school community that rocked in unison to the music. The songs that received the most attention were "Respect," "Car Wash," and "Sweet Child of Mine". One highlight of the afternoon performance was the united school group WAVE to the beat of the music. Another highlight of the performance was when principal, Mr. Greco, got up to surprise students by playing keyboard when as band performed the song "Mustang Sally". What pizzazz he played with – woohoo! An AWESOME school.

Korah Theatre Company brings home awards.

The Korah Theatre Company, mentored by Ms. McLean, recently submitted two one-act plays for adjudication in the Soothfest Youth Drama Festival. The Festival took place April 21st -23rd at Korah Collegiate. The two plays presented were ROULETTE by Douglas Hill & GENUS DE MILO by Celia Crispin.
Both plays were directed by Liisa Steinwedel, who received an Adjudicator’s Award for having the courage to tackle direction of a difficult script - ROULETTE. Danial O’Brien received the award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Lead Role for ROULETTE while Donja Trivers was nominated for Outstanding Female Actor in a Lead Role, also for ROULETTE.
GENUS DE MILO received an Adjudicator’s Award for best use of Set, props, lighting and music to set Atmosphere. Brendan Christie and Jesse Evans received nominations for Outstanding Male Actor in a Supporting Role. Emma Cain and Erin Sherwood did an outstanding job rounding out the cast for GENUS, which received a nomination for Best Production. In addition, both of the festival’s Spunk & Spirit Awards were awarded to Korah Students - Danial O’Brien (Stage One/Korah) and Janet (Jay) Nguyen.
Congratulations also go out to Michael Greco for receiving the Megan Doble Award for Most Promising Talent. Michael directed the play THE BABYSITTER by Laurie Woodward for STAGE ONE and also received an Adjudicator’s Award for his work with that production. Michael was also assistant director and lighting assistant for Korah’s entries.

MATH CONTEST

As a school team Korah’s grade nine’s placed third in our zone out of twenty-one schools, the grade ten’s placed eighth out of eighteen schools and the grade eleven’s placed second out of seventeen schools in our zone. Congratulations Korah math students. Keep up the great work!

ENVIROTHON

Congratulation goes out to all Envirothon members who braved the cold this weekend at Hiawatha. The team composed of Cody Wisniewski, Steven Groulx, Tyler Rennes, Ian Shaule, and Jessica Chisholm placed second. While Donja Trivers, Jesse Evans, Karissa Barbro, CJ Mortin, and Brittany Cleminson won the oral presentation competition and placed third overall. Congratulations to both our teams!

Adventure Racers

A big shout out to all Adventure Racers who competed this past weekend in Huntsville. They braved the cold, wet, muddy conditions and showed great perseverance and spirit. Congratulations go out to Andrew Barbeau, Jack Carlyle, Jarrett Cummings, Spencer Hogan, and Adam Hopfgartner. Great job guys!

Badminton

NOSSA: Colts seniors lead the way to a third straight NOSSA badminton crown.
Gold medal performances by Ian Roney (men’s singles), Suzy Yan (ladies singles) and Kayla Odorizzi and Scott Hopkin (mixed doubles), Korah placed first in the Senior Division.
Korah added a second-place showing in midget. Haley Allen and Rebecca Rowe topped the field in ladies doubles.

OFSSA Badminton
Congratulations goes out to Ian Roney, Suzy Yan, Scott Hopkins and Kayla Odorizzi on their preformance at OFSSA Badminton. Ian and Suzy placed in the top 16 while Kayla and Scott lost to the eventual winners, placing them in the top eight. Great work!

Trevor Stinson Fundraiser

On Thursday, May 1, Mustang Sally provided the entertainment for a fundraiser, hosted by OSSTF at Elk's Hall to celebrate Trevor Stinson's (OSSTF District 2 President) recovery. Trevor Stinson proved to be a magnanimous host, standing at the entrance to greet all those coming in to the celebration. Many teachers and school administrators to show their support. The house was rocking and Mrs.Williams was too as she took centre stage, along with Mustang Sally to wow the crowd with her keyboard talents. The evening was a success.Thanks to all who contributed and helped to celebrate the return of the Come Back Kid.

ADSB Professional Development Day 2008

Mustang Sally opened the day's events introducing the theme of Character Education to a rousing crowd of teachers. Theme songs such as Respect, Workin' At the Car Wash, Some Kinda Wonderful, and Hokie Pokie electrified the crowd who joined in to show their cooperative character attributes by standing, dancing, and waving their arms in unison. It was an energetic beginning to a very energetic day.

Earth Day

On April 22 Korah students pitched in, pulled up, pushed over and tossed everything including a toilet into the recycle bins and garbage containers for an Earth Day activity.

ROCKIN' DOWN THE HOUSE

On Friday, April 18, Korah's very own characters of distinction in Character Education, took to the stage to perform for elementary students from William Merrifield, H.M. Robbins, Greenwood, R.M. Moore,Isabelle Fletcher and Bay View, along with clients and the carestaff from Community Living Algoma. Mustang Sally sang songs related to a number of character attributes, some of which were: respect for self and others, teamwork, cooperation, courage and compassion. As well,musicians pulled out symbolic objects from a "Character Education"grab bag and explained the meaning of each object drawn as it related to Mustang Sally. The musical performance, along with the complementary power-point presentation, inspired the audience to participate by singing along. Following the musical performance,Mustang Sally musicians sat onstage to answer many questions from the audience. Questions from the audience had to do with character attributes as well. Mustang Sally musicians stressed the importance of specific character attributes that made them successful in MustangSally. They spoke with the audience about the importance of diligence and never giving up, and the importance of confronting one's own fearsand not their fears stop them from achieving. They also shared their experiences that required courage and explained why teamwork and cooperation were important attributes to possess in order to contribute to the success of Mustang Sally.

Korah had over 30 students who participated in the Science Fair competition at Algoma University, with our best showing ever. Most students received 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place ribbons for their senior division category, which won Korah the Alfred Askin Shield for the best senior school team for the 4th consecutive year.

For the first time ever, the top two projects of the science fair went to Korah students. Both of these students are eligible to attend the national science fair in May. The second place winner was Mackenzie Cook and first place was Angelo Posteraro. Congratulations to all who showed that Colts rule Science.

On March 19th 2008 Korah Collegiate held the annual Duke of Edinburgh’s Award ceremony, where students receiving their bronze award received their certificates and pins from Principal Holly Wickett and Group leader Patti Merelaid . The silver award winners received their pins from Superintendent Bob Cole and Jannick Harvey; they will receive their certificates at a ceremony in Toronto with presentations by the Lieutenant Governor. Erik and Haley Allen accepted their sister Britta’s gold award pin from ADSB Board Chair Wanda McQueen on her behalf. Britta will receive her certificate from a member of the Royal family during the next visit to Canada.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program began in 1956; it offers students the opportunity to challenge themselves in four key areas, Service, Skills, Physical fitness and an Expedition. There are three levels to the award, Bronze, Silver and Gold, and at each level the minimum requirements becomes more challenging. At the Gold level the student must complete a minimum of 60 hours of service over one year, develop and work on a skill regularly over a year, complete at least 50 hours of fitness over 25 weeks, take part in a 4 day expedition which they have planned, trained for and then completed in the out doors and complete a Residential Project.

Showdown in Motown

For the second time in three years, players from Korah and Sir James Dunn found out what it's like to play on an NBA floor and got to see the Detroit Pistons play.

For one and a half hours the Colts played two twenty minute halves against the Dunn team. They had access to the Palace sound system, public address system and score clock.

The Midget and Junior Division players had a chance to hit the floor for a shoot around. Sault players along with family and local fans attended the Pistons game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

This will be our last full day of "tourism". We’ll be making an early – inhumanely early – start to the day on Friday to begin the journey home.Wake up was at 0800 and breakfast at 0900. We walked back to Piazza San Marco to meet our guide for a walking tour of Venice. The walk back to the Piazza San Marco did not seem quite so confusing. Perhaps it was a bit of familiarity with the route, perhaps it was because I started taking notice of the yellow signs painted on the buildings that marked (with arrows) the route to the piazza.Venice was founded in the fifth century by dwellers fleeing the barbarian invaders. By the 12th century, Venice had established itself as a world trading and commercial hub. It was from Venice that Marco Polo set out on his great journey to the Far East.

Over time, the city acquired a vast overseas empire and wealth poured into the city funding the building of great churches and palaces. The power of Venice declined as other trade routes to the east were opened and the republic fell in 1797. In 1866, the city became part of the newly unified Italy
We began our tour by walking along the Riva degli Schiavoni to the crossing of the first canal – at the Rio di Palazzo. From there, it’s possible to look north to see the Ponte dei Sospiri (the Bridge of Sighs). The bridge connects old prisons with interrogation rooms in the Doge’s palace. The bridge acquired the name in the 19th century thanks to the poet Lord Byron. There are two legends surrounding the name – one says that the name was earned because it was the windows on the bridge that gave prisoners their last glimpse of Venice before incarceration. Another legend refers to the route that the condemned would take from the prison over to the square in front of the Doge’s palace; the site of execution. The reality is that the days of inquisitions and summary executions were over by the time the bridge was built, and the cells under the palace roof were occupied mostly by small-time criminals. Local legend says that lovers will be assured eternal love if they kiss on a gondola at sunset under the bridge.

The Rialto area of Venice was one of the earliest parts of the lagoon to be settled. It stands on some of the highest ground in the city and is one of the areas less likely to be flooded. Rialto was an early centre of commerce; Venetian merchants controlled trade between Europe and the Far East. The name Rialto was as familiar to medieval money men as Wall Street is today. The first bridges across the Grand Canal at Rialto were simply boats rafted together. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the first of what eventually were five wooden bridges were built. In 1557, a competition was held to choose a design for a stone bridge. Designs were submitted by Palladio, Sansovino and Michelangelo – but the commission for the bridge went to Antonio da Ponte for his (at the time) revolutionary single-span design. The sides of the span are devoted to pedestrians and provide "back-door" access to the shops that run down the centre of the bridge.

Teams are randomly partnered up for each match and their team alliance’s colour for that match (denoted by the colour of the flag each robot must carry) determines what colour of ball they are allowed to carry. Other robots and balls must be avoided during each two and a half minute game round.
