Badminton

Ian Roney finished his high school badminton career by bringing home the antique bronze OFSSA medal which places Ian as one of the top badminton singles players in the province.

Congratulations also goes out Suzy Yan who lost out in the B flight to an eventual medalist.

Envirothon Competition

Our team consisting of Cody Wisniewski, Jessica Chisholm, Steven Groulx, Tyler Renner and Brittany Cleminson earned the top prize at the 2009 Algoma Regional Envirothon Competition held on April 25 at Kinsmen Park. The students worked as a team to answer questions and perform hands on activities in the areas of Forestry, Wildlife, Soils, Aquatics and Biodiversity. As well there was an oral presentation component where the students were asked to prepare an oral presentation on a topic that encompassed all five of the areas. Korah students earned top marks in 5 of the 6 components of the competition in order to win the Algoma Regional Envirothon Competition and earn a birth into the Provincial Competition held in St. George, Ontario from May 5 to May 9.

Steven Groulx and Tyler Renner were unable to attend the provincials and were replaced by Karl Zimmerman and Dan O'Brien. The team took home the award for top rookie team and placed 10th overall out of 20 teams from all over Ontario.

Adventure Racers

Congratulations to all Adventure Racers for a spectacular showing at the High School Adventure Challenge in Huntsville. Jack Carlyle's team "Algoma Bicycle Co." placed 2nd overall, while "Team Invincible" made up of Andrew Barbeau, Jarrett Cummings and Spencer Hogan placed 3rd overall in a field of 64 teams. Sophie Dargle and Garrett Roth's "Men with Baggage" placed 1st in the Co-ed division. Way to go to all students for their intrepid spirit!

Regional Champions

Congratulations to the members of the envirothon team who won the regional competition this past weekend. The team will be participating in the Provincial competition next week.

Atlanta World Competition

The team finished 34th out of 87 teams in their division. They did not move into the finals, however all are proud of their accomplishments and excited to have competed with 350 of the best teams from around the world.
"Holly - The Wickett Robot" performed very well!

The Algoma District School Board robotics team won a silver medal at the Waterloo FIRST Regional Robotics Competition.

Art Circuit

Badminton

The Korah Badminton team had an excellent showing these past 2 days at the City championships that were held here at our school. Our grade nines combined to capture the midget division overall, as did our grade tens in order to win the overall junior title and our grade 11 and 12's combined to win the overall senior division. Our Colts as a team for the 18th year in a row, yes that’s right, 18 years straight won the overall badminton aggregate championship which is a combination of boys and girls, midget, junior and senior divisions. Way to go Colts!!!

Food for Thought:
here are a few good review points to remember each time you compose an image.

1. Make sure your horizon line is level.

2. Look for distracting elements in your viewfinder that might take away for an otherwise excellent composition.

3. If you want sharp front-to-back detail, make sure you have enough depth of field.

4. Look for things in the composition that will allow you to use the basic design elements of line, shape, texture and form.

5. Look for good foreground subjects to add that three-dimensional look to the composition.


Give these few suggestions a try as you develop you own eye for composition.

Outdoor Activities

New this year at Korah is the course Outdoor Activities. This course focuses on the development of a personalized approach to healthy active living through participation in a variety of outdoor activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Students will develop and implement personal physical fitness plans. In addition, they will be given opportunities to refine their decision-making, conflict-resolution, and interpersonal skills, with a view to enhancing their mental health and their relationships with others.

Best Senior School

Congratulations to all Korah students who participated in the Regional Science Fair on March 27th-29th. All Korah students received ribbons for prizes in their senior categories. In addition, our school once again brought home the Alfred Askin Shield for the Best Senior School in the competition. The following students received additional awards:

Allister Smith: $75 Ontario Power Generation Award for Best in Earth and Environmental Sciences,
$50 Gary Rahn Memorial Award for the Best Natural History Project, and a $1000 scholarship to the University of Ottawa for the Best Senior Project.

Megan Garside: $100 Ontario Association of Medical Laboratories Award for the Top Laboratory Project,
$75 Don Wallace Memorial Award for the Best in Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

Amanda Giunti: $75 Great Lakes Forestry Centre Award.

The high school robotics team “The Knights of Alloy” just returned from the FIRST Robotics - Greater Toronto Regional, where they won the "Engineering Inspiration Award" (described below). This is the second highest award available at a regional competition.

Winning this award, qualifies the team to attend the FIRST Championship held in Atlanta Georgia on April 16 – 18^th! Over 300 teams from around the world will be there!

The Toronto event had 59 teams competing for this and other awards as well as on the playing field, where our team and robot finished 9th overall after regular play with a 6 win and 2 loss record. We advanced to the quarter finals, however did not move beyond.

To win the Engineering award, the students created a 3 minute video and made a presentation to a panel of judges who were truly amazed by the vast array of activities our team participates in, learning about and promoting Math, Science and Technology (Engineering) each year. Of significant note, was the students' involvement mentoring our elementary school Lego teams and running the Sault College competition. Our community partnerships with Tenaris, Sault College and local engineering firms were also applauded.

Funding for the trip is going to be a significant challenge, which the team will focus on over the next two weeks. Students will also be tweaking some of the robots mechanical parts to optimize performance in Atlanta.

ENGINEERING INSPIRATION AWARD - This award celebrates a team’s outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering and engineers, both within their school as well as their community. Criteria include: the extent and inventiveness of the team’s efforts to recruit students to engineering, the extent and effectiveness of the team’s community outreach efforts, and the measurable success of those efforts.

MUSTANG SALLY AT MOUNTAIN VIEW PUBLIC SCHOOL

Mustang Sally was invited to conduct a Character Education Day at Mountain View Public School on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 and oh, what a day it was. The morning classroom visits involved Mustang Sally musicians, in their leadership role, discussing character attributes
as they pertain to band members, their personal lives, and their school lives. Mustang Sally fielded many questions about auditions and Korah high school life. As well, the primary grades were treated to their very own concert in the gym and they were introduced to each
instrument and to a number of character attributes the band members use to work together (i.e., personal responsibility, perseverance, co-operation, teamwork, caring and fairness). Students of Mountain View showed their own good character, by being very keen listeners during the morning presentations, and by being so very friendly, helpful, and polite throughout the day.

The afternoon performance to the school included several features. Kaylee Raynor, one of our vocalists, spoke about the importance of following your dreams using character attributes such as perseverance, courage, and self-respect. Katie Stafford, a student at Mountain View showed her courageous side by willingly coming up to the stage to help our Mustang Sally vocalist, Kaylee, sing “Walkin’ on Sunshine.” Way to go Katie! Another highlight was the premiere performance of our new song called “Character Ed.” The song sheet (lyrics and music) was
presented to Mr. Bell and the school. A power-point presentation with slides related to several character attributes, accompanied each song in the set and a video, Angel, produced by Sir George Ross students and staff, permission of Thames Valley District School Board, was
viewed. The video is about bullying, the importance of standing up for the victim, and the importance of speaking out against bullying. Mustang Sally’s own vocalist, Jenna Train, sang the song “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan to accompany the video. Many thanks go to Mr. Bell and
teachers and students for such a warm, enthusiastic welcome, and for being such gracious hosts for the day. We had so much fun together.

DUKE of EDINBURGH AWARD CEREMONY 2009

BRONZE AWARD winners

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a program that was designed to challenge young people between the ages of fourteen and twenty-five years to reach for their best. The Awards are designed in ascending order of achievement: Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. Each level provides for training, achievement and recognition for good citizenship. The programme aims to broaden interest and deepen experience by embracing a wide variety of adventurous, cultural and practical activities. Korah Collegiate’s Duke of Edinburgh Award Ceremony was held on Thursday March 5^th 2009 in the Cafeteria.

BRONZE AWARD

The following students were honoured at this ceremony for completing all requirements for their Bronze Award. These students completed a minimum of 15 hours of service, the Bronze expedition, 6 months on learning a skill and at least 30hrs of fitness in 15 weeks. GOLD AWARD

The Gold Award requires an additional 60hrs of service, the Gold Expedition, skill development over 12 months, 50 hrs of fitness over 25 weeks and a residential project.

Hilary Ortiz and Karina Seto were honoured at the ceremony for the successful completion of the Gold Award. Hilary received her gold pin form Mr Bob Cole, Principal of Korah Collegiate. Karina Seto was not able to attend as she is away at University. Hilary and Karina will receive their award at a special ceremony from a member of the Royal family on their next visit to Canada .

Little Shop of Horrors

The talent or our students is awesome. Thanks to Denine Williams for her hours of work directing the show and the many staff and volunteers. The plant and set created by Ian Ganton is impressive and the organization and coordination of the stage and sound by Megan Morley and Paul Sawchyn has been fantastic. Thank you also to Bobbi Gasparelli, David Young, our student teacher, and Greg Ryckman for their help and musical talents in the pit band.

MUSTANG SALLY CHARACTER EDUCATION AT GRAND VIEW PUBLIC SCHOOL

Mustang Sally was invited to conduct a Character Education Day at
Grand View Public School on Wednesday, February 18, 2009. Students
showed their own good character by coming into the gym to lend a
helping hand when Mustang Sally members were setting up seating and
again, later, when the seating had to be disassembled at the end of
the day. Many thanks to all those hardworking students whose teamwork
made the job seem effortless.

The morning classroom visits involved Mustang Sally musicians, in

pertain to band members, their personal lives, and their school lives.
Mustang Sally fielded many questions about auditions and Korah high

is the attribute being emphasized for February. Mustang Sally members

performance, because it is only fair to let each have a solo
spotlight.

Certificate for first place for the "Create Your Own Challenge" School Challenge where Korah submitted a list of initiatives that they are involved in to help reduce, reuse and recycle.

Korah took top honours in the highshcool division in the city's "Bag This" School Challenge. In a ceremony at the school on Friday morning Korah was awarded $1000 along with various certificates by Randy Roy, the city’s Waste Diversion Supervisor, along with members of the Shopper Loyalty “Bag This” committee members Charlie Thomlinson and Anna Boyonoski.

The competition which was kicked off October 1 was designed to reduce the number of plastic bags sent to landfill and to encourage and promote the use of reusable bags. The competition was made up of six challenges.

The problem with the plastic bags at the landfill is not the amount of space they take up but they cause problems by flying all over and “littering the landfill,” according to Roy. He says that landfill fill staff spend hours trying to pick up the bags and those that get away can end up anywhere “They don’t stop blowing”. Roy cites a recent news story about a tortoise choking on a plastic bag. “You don’t know where that bag came from.”

Thanks to this initiative Roy says 225,000 bags were sent to recycling. The bags were sent to GTA Recycling where then to a company that turns the bags into decking. The bags were collected between October 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009 and totalled 2,019 kilograms. “I thought I would be able to pick up them up in my Ford Focus” said Roy “but there were just too many.”

Charlie Thomlinson told the students that 4783 students, parents and families from across the city took part in challenge, 18 schools participated including two that were late to project, and with the bags collected 11 backyard decks measuring 3 meters by 4 meters could be constructed.

Korah Collegiate & Vocational School has helped keep Sault Ste. Marie healthy and beautiful by
- Reporting on what their school is doing currently to address waste reduction, reuse and recycling (3Rs)
- Providing suggestions that reinforce and promote continuous awareness of waste reduction and environmental issues.

Practice, practice, practice

The robot is complete and on the way to its first competition in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then to another competition in Mississauga, Ontario. This year the robot
is competing to gather balls off a low friction playing surface intended to simulate the
surface of the moon, and then shoot baskets? The robot which is able to score the
most points wins. The challenge is complicated by the fact that other robots are trying
to knock it off course and prevent it from winning. Students had to design and build their
own robot. The technical, engineering and programming skills used in this competition
are impressive. Thank you to Steve Burmaster, Jon Budau and Rob Marshall from AHHS,
for leading this team. Thanks also to those who helped from the community. Joe Edder
and Craig Mock from TENERIS, Cal Oswin from EPOH, Mike Aikens and John Larue
from ESSAR and Al Gooderham from Sault College. This year’s robot was dedicated to
Holly Wickett and named Holly the “Wickett” robot.

Valentines Day is coming fast, and there's no better gift than roses! Come on out and support Water For Life in the front foyer at lunch by buying roses for that special someone! Roses are $3.00 each and are only being sold from Monday to Thursday.

Korah Collects over 27,500 Books to Help Africa

Grade 11 Korah student, Amber Levesque, first heard about Invisible Children’s "Schools for Schools" book drive in the fall. She immediately enlisted the help of Korah teacher Megan Morley and started promoting the program.
In a few short months, Korah students, staff, parents and members of the public donated between 27,500 and 28,000 books, which are being sent to Better World Books. Although Amber hoped to reach a goal of 30,000 books, she was excited to see Korah collect the thousands and thousands they did. Free shipping was offered to schools which collected over 10,000 books. Better World Books either sends the books to impoverished areas or sells them, with all proceeds going toward new books in Africa.
One student from each of the three schools collecting the most books will be given a free trip to help build a school in Uganda. Korah is in the running for one of the top three spots and will find out if they qualify in a couple of weeks.
