CARING Character
Perfect in PINK: On Wednesday, February 27th students and staff wore pink to bring attention to the problem of bullying on Anti Bullying Day. Erin Maloney, Student Body President, just gave me the write-up for the picture you took of everyone wearing pink. Here it is:
Korah takes a stand against bullying by wearing pink on National Pink Day, February 27, 2008. This initiative started in Halifax, N.S. and is slowly working its way across Canada. Way to show spirit Korah!

Jack Layton Visit
Jack Layton Visits Korah!
By Ali Nardo
Feb. 27 2008
On Wed., Feb. 20 2008, the leader of the NDP, Jack Layton and Sault Ste. Marie’s MP, Tony Martin (pictured above with Korahs co Student Council presidents) came to Korah to give a speech about various topics including health care, education, Canadians in Afghanistan, and the environment.
Mr. Layton appealed to many of Korah’s senior students with a promise of freezing and lowering tuition fees for colleges and universities. He also explained that health care is of the utmost importance to the NDP. The NDP would also like to bring Canadian troops fighting in Afghanistan home to their families. Jack Layton says that he also wants to implement plans to make Canada "greener" by cutting emissions from homes and businesses as well as recycling.
Layton was a very convincing speaker and his promises of better health care, lower tuition and all of his other commitments seem genuine. He also encouraged the students to get involved in some small form of politics. If you are interested you can find out more information at the NDP website http://www.ndp.ca/.

NOSSA Champions
Pictures are worth a thousand words. COLTS win in Sudbury in overtime!
"We have renamed the team the Cardiac Kids because the fans were barely breathing in overtime."
"It was a great weekend in Sudbury for Korah junior boys’ basketball action. In semi final NOSSA play on Friday evening, our Colts downed the host school, Lasalle Lancers, 47 to 44.Greg Gagnon put the Colts up by three by nailing two foul shots with 12 seconds to go. He also led the Colts in scoring with 15 points while Mitch Dionisi added 12. Both Anthony Greco and Jesse Lacasse chipped in with six points each. In the NOSSA championship game our boys won a very exciting game in overtime, 66 to 59, over west Ferris out of North Bay. The Colts were up an intermission , 43 to 27, only to see west Ferris come back in the second half to tie it at 54. The North Bay team knocked down 10 three point shots throughout the competition. However, the Colts exploded for 12 points in the 4 minute overtime period to win it by seven. Greg Gagnon and Mitch Dionisi both hit for 16 points while Connor Maloney and Anthony Greco added 12. Jesse Lacasse also chipped in with 8. Great work boys!"

Robotics update
As the 44-day build session for this year's FIRST Robotics season inches towards its Tuesday deadline, ADSB's Robotics team, the Knights of Alloy, submitted their final draft of the team's Web Site to the FIRST Judging Panel in time for the midnight deadline last night. As a part of the overall competition requirements, teams must design, build and maintain an operational Web Site and this site is judged in a separate category for each Regional Competition. At stake is the Top Regional Web Site Award, which will pit our site against 29 other teams who are competing in Waterloo, Ontario next month. The team's site is located at http://www.knightsofalloy.ca/ and will be periodically updated throughout the competition season. Actual judging of the site will commence next week and the team will find out the final results of this part of the competition on March 21st, during the Regional competition in Waterloo, Ontario.
The team's robot, nearing completion this weekend, will be packed in a shipping crate and shipped to Waterloo on Tuesday. The team will depart for the competition on March 19th and will uncrate the robot when they arrive at the University of Waterloo campus to compete on March 20th to 22nd.
This marks the 4th season that Sault secondary school students have participated in this international competition. In their rookie year, the team won the Top Web Site Award at the Great Lakes Regional in Ypsilanti.

Philanthropists
Korah students are becoming philanthropists! A variety of students and groups have been donating their time and the funds they have raised to various organizations in Sault Ste. Marie and around the world.
First semester saw many Korah students donating their time at the Soup Kitchen with Students’ Council and collecting canned goods for those in need. The Robotics team introduced many elementary schools to the Lego League and have continued to develop mentorship programs. The Leadership class collected funds and made a monetary donation to Women in Crisis demonstrating many of the values they learned in their curriculum. A group of students sold t-shirts to raise awareness of world hunger and made a monetary donation to World Vision Canada. Mustang Sally continued to promote character education, and the attributes associated with this, through their many school and public performances.
Korah staff are also getting involved with donations made to the United Way, and the Yoga group making a contribution to the Women in Crisis organization.
At Korah, we try to encompass a variety of activities intended to promote good will or improve quality of life. What a great message to pass along! Remember what Albert Einstein said… it is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes of it!

Student Book Club
Korah’s Book Club kicked off September with the novel Ender’s Game by Scott Orson Card. The group of 10 had a wonderful lunch and discussion about the novel at the beginning of October. For November, everyone read Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher. The club again met over lunch to discuss the book. The third book read was Playing Without the Ball by Rich Wallace. Next came the Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. Students had the opportunity to compare the book with the new release at the movie theatre. Up next for February is Crabbe by William Bell. If you are interested in joining, please sign up in the library. All students at Korah are welcome to join the Club… more exciting things to come!
The student club has now lead to the formation of the Staff Book Club.. and is continuing in grow in size! It seems there are a great deal of readers walking the halls and teaching our classes. Staff have already read Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides and are now focus on devouring A Spot of Bother by Mark Hadden. If you are an avid reader, you may wish to get involved with this after school club to discuss some fantastic books.
