Mustang Sally

Mustang Sally plays to family and friends at Korah on Dec. 8, 2009.

Mustang Sally is back at it for the 2009-2010 school year. Check out what they have been up to! The past 3 months have been a blur to the members of Mustang Sally. On September 26 the group performed their first gig of the year after only having 5 practices. They delivered an outstanding gig to RBC regional meeting at Windsor Park that had them begging for more.

Mustang Sally is again promoting Character Education throughout the Algoma District School Board with pride. The group performed their very first elementary school gig of the year on October 30th to a “rockin” crowd at Pinewood PS. They were able to record their original song “Character Ed” for the ADSB Character CD that will be release in the new year. The first two months of rehearsals for the band were very busy with extra practices scheduled to prepare for the group's performances at the National Character Education Conference that was held in Huntsville Ontario at the Deerhurst Resort November 1, 2 and 3rd. The group performed two 20 minutes sets to students from around the country. The group also performed 2 night sets for the adults attending the conference. Mustang Sally left a great impression on both the students and the adults that were at the conference. They also had an opportunity to have their picture taken with David Suzuki at a book signing!Mustang Sally performed its second character education gig on November 13th at CASS, where the audience was both elementary students and high school students. The audience rocked out to a set filled with rock and pop songs such as Dear Mr. President, Angel, Walkin on Sunshine, Dawn of a New Day, We Will Rock You, Who Are You, Who Knew, What's Going On, I Want You Back, Magic, One, Sweet Home Alabama and many more. That night they also went to the Great Northern Conference Center and performed for Mr. Caruso at their hockey fundraiser. What a busy day full of music! On November 20th the band played in Korah’s auditorium which was filled to capacity with its feeder school students. The audience joined in singing many of the bands songs and also danced along. The electricity in the room was magical! The band inspired many elementary students to come to Korah in the future and get involved in high school life. Morgan Steele performed “Video Killed the Radio Star” for the first time, and the audience loved it.The band performed on November 30th at the Speak Easy at Algoma University to a crowd of students that were attending the Sault Ste Marie Innovation Centre's Youth Entrepreneurship Workshop.

Mustang Sally believes it is important to get involved in community events and give back whenever they can.And.. don't forget... MUSTANG SALLY'S GREAT BIG GIG is April 9, 2010 at the Great Northern Conference Center. You must be 19+ to enter, but the tickets make excellent stocking stuffers for the music lovers in your life. Tickets are $10 and are available from any band member or the main office!

City Cross Country at Hiawatha

Heavy rain and cold temperatures couldn't stop your Colts Cross Country team from coming out on top at the city meet. Your Colts won team awards in Midget Girls, Junior Girls, Midget Boys, Senior Boys and came second in Senior Girls. With such a strong team effort your colts claimed, for the first time, the girls overall and boys overall City Championship. As Mackie Edwards would say, “IT WAS AWESOME.” The following is a list of the top 6 finishers.

Teija Humalamaki - 6th Midget girls
Nick Burns - City Champ - 1st Midget boys
Liam Train - 6th Midget boys
Mariah Krancevich - 2nd Junior girls
Jaimee Carter - 6th Junior girls
Karl Zimmermann - 4th Junior boys
Corey Conforzi - 5th Junior boys
Sophie Kargl - 3rd Senior girls
Elyse McCarthy - 6th Senior girls
Jack Carlyle - City Champ - Senior boys
Mackie Edwards - 2nd Senior boysStephen Erickson - 6 th Senior boys

Thank you to cross-country coaches, Janis Hogan, Carolyn Fitzpatrick, Terri Finlayson, Jennifer Mireault, and Scot McCron for doing a fantastic job with our girls and boys teams.

NOSSA Update:

For the first time in school history your Korah Cross Country team came home from NOSSA as Aqqreate Overall Champions! The Junior Girls and Senior Boys came home as team champions while the Senior Girls were second overall, and the Midget Boys team tied for second. Top honors go to Mariah Krancevich who finishes second in junior girls, while Nick Burns and Jack Carlyle were fifth overall. Though the weather conditions were less than ideal, and the team was hit hard by the flu, all runners dug deep and ran their hearts out! Sixteen runners will now be representing Korah at OFSAA later in the week. Congratulations and way-to-go Colts!

Welcome Week

During the week of September 14-18, 2009, Korah's grade 9 homerooms battled each other in the 2009 “Welcome Week” competitions. The winning class was named “Grade 9 Orientation Week Homeroom Champions 2009 ” and received an in-class Subway party! The competitions included dress up days--with points awarded to the homeroom for each student dressed appropriately. The dress up themes were as follows:

MONDAY- Pajama Day (Students were invited to wear their PJ's)
TUESDAY- Jersey Day (Any sports jersey of their choice)
WEDNESDAY- Western Day (Cowboy/western themed attire)
THURSDAY- Spirit Day! (Our colours, BROWN AND GOLD)
FRIDAY- Crazy Hair/Hat Day

Along with each themed attire day, there were fun competitive events occurring at lunch time. Monday's event was a Tug-o'-War, where homerooms would try to pull the other over the “line.” Tuesday consisted of the Korah classic Ice Cream Eating Contest, where blindfolded students would have to feed other blindfolded students while standing behind them--a tough feat! Wednesday's event was a water balloon toss. Thursday's event was the fantastic “Fly On The Wall” which students have enjoyed for many years. The task? To duct tape a student ambassador (Grade 10-12) to the gym wall (no easy undertaking), and see how long they remain there after removing the chair below their feet. Friday's event was the most active for the whole school. Many people in all grades watched, and some participated. Grade 9's had the task of dunking Korah students and teachers in the “Dunk Tank!” Some of the Korah 'dunk reps' included: our principal--Mr. Iacoe, Mr. Martella, Greg Gagnon, Joe Tassone, Mr. Manchester, Students' Council Presidents--Alison Bovingdon and Stephanie Johnson, and more!

Because of these events, an anonymous grade 9 student says he feels “more at home because [his] home room class worked together to be the best [they] could be, and even though [they] didn't win, [they] had fun trying.” Korah students would like to thank Mr. Giovanatti, Mrs. Elliott, Students' Council and presidents Stephanie Johnson and Alison Bovingdon for organizing such a great event!

Music Lessons

On Thursday, September 17th, the Korah Concert Band and grade 9 and 10 music classes visited White Pines C&VS to see the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The TSO was in Sault Ste. Marie as a part of the Algoma Fall Festival. As they did three years ago, the orchestra invited music classes from the Algoma District School Board to a day-time concert where they played several famous pieces, such as Grieg's “Peer Gynt,” and Rossini's “William Tell Overture.” The conductor invited a student from the audience to conduct the Orchestra. She led them in a rousing rendition of Offenbach's famous Can-Can. In the concert, a former Algoma District School Grad, James Gardner who is now with the TSO, played the final movement from Hummel's Trumpet Concerto.

Concert Bands from the district were also invited to stay for a lecture from an accomplished composer, followed by lunch. Master's classes led by members of the TSO were held for each individual instrument - or musical section. There was a workshop for flutes, for clarinets and saxophones, for percussion, and one for brass instruments such as the tuba, trumpet, and trombone. Students say, “The experience with each amazing musician was very beneficial. They helped us learn proper technique and form which is very important in music.” The Korah Concert Band and teachers would like to thank the TSO for a fun, entertaining, and educational experience.
