Korah Collects over 27,500 Books to Help Africa

Grade 11 Korah student, Amber Levesque, first heard about Invisible Children’s "Schools for Schools" book drive in the fall. She immediately enlisted the help of Korah teacher Megan Morley and started promoting the program.
In a few short months, Korah students, staff, parents and members of the public donated between 27,500 and 28,000 books, which are being sent to Better World Books. Although Amber hoped to reach a goal of 30,000 books, she was excited to see Korah collect the thousands and thousands they did. Free shipping was offered to schools which collected over 10,000 books. Better World Books either sends the books to impoverished areas or sells them, with all proceeds going toward new books in Africa.
One student from each of the three schools collecting the most books will be given a free trip to help build a school in Uganda. Korah is in the running for one of the top three spots and will find out if they qualify in a couple of weeks.

Mustang Sally visits Queen Elizabeth School

Mustang Sally celebrated character education at Queen Elizabeth on Wednesday, January 14, 2009, a school so very close to the heart of one of our vocalists – Kaylee Raynor, who is a grade eight student there. Kaylee not only sang, but told students about the importance
of having the courage to follow their dreams, just as she has by being in Mustang Sally. The junior kindergarten class was treated to their very own concert where Mustang Sally musicians introduced students to different instruments. As well, some musicians went to grades 5/6,
6/7, 7/8 and grade 8 classes to discuss the process of becoming a part of Mustang Sally, and how character attributes (honesty, responsibility, integrity, cooperation, respect, perseverance, caring, leadership) are demonstrated in the band. An attribute of special focus was that of responsibility. Leo Moore and Johnee Whalen talked about the negative effects of irresponsibility on teamwork in the band and the importance of taking responsibility to attend all rehearsals, and practice individually.
Students were also informed about high school life and given opportunities to ask questions about it. A very special performance was given to Mustang Sally by Mr. Collin's class – they performed an opera that they had composed and written lyrics for,
previously arranged for a performance at the Kiwanis Community Theatre in December. The afternoon offered a special story with musical accompaniment to the school assembly, called A Chance to Shine followed by a set of 12 of Mustang Sally's favourite Character Education songs. Special thanks to the fine staff and students for their hospitality and to Mrs. Atkinson (Principal) and Mrs. McTaggart (Vice-Principal) for their luncheon arrangements and for their very warm welcome.
